Environmental Science Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Environmental Science - Research Paper Example According to all peer-reviewed scientific studies, if the quantity of greenhouse gasses being spewed into the air by automobiles, power plants and factories is not greatly reduced and quickly, the earth and its inhabitants will experience catastrophic consequences in the not too distant future. This paper will discuss the viability of various alternative fuels such as hydrogen, bio- fuels, solar, geothermal and nuclear sources which if put into practice on a wide scale would significantly reduce air pollution and perhaps circumvent the predicted effects. One solution to reducing automobile emissions may be found in vegetable fields. The conversion of corn or beets into ethanol is promoted by scientists as an environmentally and economically sound solution to global climate change concerns. However, this is hardly a new revelation. Rudolf Diesel, in 1897, fifteen years after the inventing the engine named after him said ââ¬Å"The use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insign ificant today. But such oils may become, in the course of time, as important as petroleum and the coal products of the present timeâ⬠(Boles, 2005). ... Bio-fuels are derived from a readily accessible source and emit no pollutants. The most familiar kind, Ethanol, is a vegetable oil which is most often be mixed with gasoline and bio-diesel. It can be burned by diesel engines without altering the engine. Ethanol, a ââ¬Ëgreenââ¬â¢ fuel, could be used as a bridge to the future of consumption and energy production because it can be used in existing engines unlike hydrogen. Another by-product of the bio-fuels industry is tit will ââ¬Ëfuelââ¬â¢ the growth of agricultural businesses. Regrettably, it takes significantly more energy (from high-grade gasoline) to create ethanol than it produces. It takes approximately70 percent more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than is contained in a gallon of ethanol. In addition, ââ¬Å"fossil fuel is used in the production of corn or any crop used for ethanol and by increasing ethanol production will increase degradation of vital agricultural and water resources and will seriously contr ibute to the pollution of the environmentâ⬠(Pimentel, 1998, p. 5). European countryââ¬â¢s both produce and consume close to 90 percent of the worldââ¬â¢s bio-fuel. Brazil makes up most of the remaining 10 percent. Brazil produces more bio-fuel than it consumes and does not import crude oil. The South American nation is energy independent and among the lowest producers, by capita, of greenhouse gasses. The quantity of bio-fuels produced and consumed is predicted to grow significantly over the next decade. ââ¬Å"It is possible that (bio-fuels) could represent as much as 20 percent of all on-road diesel used in Brazil, Europe, China and India by the year 2020â⬠(ââ¬Å"Biodieselâ⬠, 2006). In the U.S., the production of bio-fuels grew six-times during a two year period

Impact of low number of minorities working in healthcare industry in Research Paper
Impact of low number of minorities working in healthcare industry in usa - Research Paper Example Eventually, the disparities in the provision of care due to racism and ethnic issues will be tackled in details. Given that the majority of the health care providers are the Native Americans, the impact of language barriers in terms of providing care to minorities who could not speak the English language well will be determined. Given that half the US population would be the minorities, the impact of language barrier between the health care providers and the minorities as patients will be thoroughly analyzed. As of November 16, 2009, the total number of population in the United States is 307,946,634 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2009). In line with this, the total population of white Americans alone is composed of 65% of the total population. The rest of the minorities includes Hispanic (15%), African Americans (13%), Asian (4%), Two or More Races (2%), American Indian & Alaska Native (1%), and Native Hawaiian & Other Pacific Islander (0%) (U.S. Census Bureau, 2009b). (See Figure I ââ¬â US Population by Race & The number of minorities working in the health care industry is very limited as compared to the White Americans. Since the minorities are earning less as compared to the White American physicians, Weeks & Wallace (2006) revealed that black male and female family physicians tend to serve more patients as compared with the White Americans male and female counterparts. This is probably due to the fact that the number of African Americans who are practicing as family physicians is less as compared to the population of African Americans they are serving. Although socio-economic and racial issues are among the common factors that has contributed to lower number of available health care professionals in the United States, Sabin, Rivara, & Greenwald (2008) revealed that the classification of health care profession also matters when it comes to racial bias such that pediatricians are less likely to implicit racial

Explain Crime Rates Essay Example for Free
Explain Crime Rates Essay The two theories with respect to criminology I would be using would be the Social Disorganization Theory and the Anomie Theory. Durkheim introduced the term ââ¬ËAnomieââ¬â¢ in the 19th or the early 20th century. He considered that Anomie had a major role to play with respect to social behavior. He felt that the level of moral consciousness may differ from one individual to another, and deviations often resulted in crime. Robert Merton developed ideas to establish a link between criminal behavior and Anomie. Merton considered that social pressures caused an individual to behave in a non-compliant or an abnormal manner. In society, an individual had certain goals and means of fulfilling these goals. Initially an individual may choose acceptable means to achieve these goals. However, as the situation deteriorates, he would be choosing increasingly unacceptable means to achieve the goals (Reid, 1985). The social disorganization theory was proposed by the Chicago School of Sociology. It is a situation in which divergence away from the normal is seen due to certain social situations. Any disturbance to normal social life would result in an increase in crime and disharmony. When social organization is present, positive relationship, values and goals also develop. Read more:à Essay About Crime Rate Increase in India In the past the social disorganization theory has been utilized to explain disturbance during the World War 1, World War 2 and the Great Depression (Reid, 1985). A criminal case in our local community was a string of suicides committed by three teenagers who attended school. Investigations revealed that the teenagers were not happy with the results they had obtained in High School. Studies revealed that the local leader, who was responsible for the educational policy adopted by the state, had adopted rather tough measures, which resulted in high failure rates and frustration in the school children. As the social pressures were high, the teenagers were behaving in a non-complaint or an unreasonable manner. This goes along with the Anomie theory. Studies also revealed that the other ministries that were responsible for public welfare were not functioning properly during that period. Hence, there was an increase in the social disorganization rate (as normal life was affected). The teenagers committing suicide expressed the dissatisfaction and the disharmony in the society. This helps to prove the Social Disorganization theory.
Positive Communication in Pre-School Setting
Positive Communication in Pre-School Setting Janet Murphy 1. Maintaining effective communication and avoiding any barriers It is essential to have effective and positive communication within a pre-school setting for the staff, the children and their families or carers in order to develop solid and caring relationships. It is important for pre-school managers to develop a strong working relationship with staff with effective communication. This will create a much happier and productive working environment for all staff, which in turn will encourage an effective and positive relationship with the children within the setting and their families or carers. In order to keep all up to date with current issues within the setting, e.g any child protection issues, medical diagnosis needs of a child, any new children starting within the setting, any new policies introduced by the setting, it is necessary at all times to keep communication between all staff and management up to the minute and current. This can be carried out either verbally or non-verbally, for example via e-mail, memos etc. Nurturing and maintaining good communication levels between staff and management also helps staff to know what is required of them and for the manager to be aware of any feelings, anxieties or uncertainties the staff may have within the setting, which then can be discussed and addressed. It is important to ensure that the staff see this communication as positive and not just the manager ââ¬Ëchecking up on themââ¬â¢. If a manager does not have this positive and effective level of communication with their staff, this could cause problems within the setting that go un-noticed and could have a negative effect for the children and families or carers. ââ¬ËThe relationships that my staff and I have with the children and their families are what make or break the business. Relationships are difficult and not always positive. The important thing is to talk. If you want staff to be nurturing then you need to nurture them show you appreciate them, make sure theyââ¬â¢re not overloaded and ensure that they know they can talk freelyââ¬â¢. (Sue Chesson, Skips Nursery). As the manager of the setting it is important to try to identify and eliminate any barriers that staff may feel towards effective and useful communication. Barriers to communication can include verbal barriers, for example a noisy environment, cultural or personality barriers and the environment of the setting being segmented making it difficult to have effective two way communication. Other areas of verbal barriers may include when a member of staff is stressed which in turn could cause a fractious atmosphere within the setting or a member of staff could possibly not understand the communication that is trying to be conveyed. Non-verbal barriers mostly consist of ââ¬Ëbody languageââ¬â¢ barriers, for example a lack of eye contact between the members of staff, unhelpful or misread facial expressions and different perceptions of body language and gestures. One of the most common communication problems within a preschool setting is simply a failure for people to listen to comments or instructions being made. 2. The appraisal process The main aim of the appraisal process is to have a two way discussion between manager and employee to identify any issues relating to the role expected of the employee and to identify any strategies necessary to improve performance within the setting. Discussions should also be made as to the wellbeing of the employee, within the setting and personally. Appraisals should also be designed to include discussions on when employee has done well in their role so that they feel that their hard work and effort has been recognised, which will then encourage good morale and motivation. The appraisal process within the pre-school setting is very important and is a very effective way to review and employeeââ¬â¢s performance over the last year and to identify any strengths and weaknesses and any concerns and barriers there may be with the employeeââ¬â¢s performance. It gives the manager and member of staff the opportunity to discuss any further training and development which would be beneficial to both the employeeââ¬â¢s long term potential and the pre-school setting and identify appropriate targets for the future. Appraisal meeting with staff and manager should be positive and productive and encourage effective working practice and strengthen the working relationships. Formal appraisals are normally carried out once a year between the manager and employee and should cover items such as working relationships, professional knowledge, communication and organisational skills. It is an opportunity for an employee to raise any issues they may have and any ideas they may have in their role and in the setting. The employee should be provided with guidance notes and an Appraisal Form prior to the meeting to assist them identify the areas they wish to discuss with the manager. There should also be an Appraisal Policy within the setting which should be available to the employee to read and discuss upon commencement of employment. Although the annual appraisal meeting is a very effective and productive way to communicate with staff, it must be remembered that some staff may find it daunting and be apprehensive about the process. It is important that the manager tries to dispel any concerns the member of staff may have and convey the meeting as positive and productive for all parties involved. Apart from the annual appraisal meeting, important issues that may raise time to time within the setting would be best addressed at the time rather than be allowed to continue, for example if a member of staff is using inappropriate language within the setting. Discussions between the manager and the employee should also take place informally throughout the year in order to monitor any targets, training and development which has been set within the appraisal meeting and/or any new issues which may have arisen since the meeting. 3. Disciplinary and Grievance procedures The disciplinary procedure within the pre-school setting is there to ensure a fair and effective method for dealing with any matters arising relating to the performance, capability and conduct of any employee. The grievance procedure is designed to enable an employee to raise any complaint they may have relating to their employment within the setting to the manager. The disciplinary process must be adhered to and the setting is expected to comply with the principles as set out by the ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures. Upon the onset of any disciplinary procedure being taken with an employee is it important that the manager follow the process as follows:- 1. The manager should carry out a full and fair investigation into the allegation to establish the facts. 2. The employee should be informed immediately of the case against them and provided with all evidence of this. 3. If the manager establishes that it is necessary to pursue a disciplinary meeting the manager must prepare a written statement of the employeeââ¬â¢s alleged misconduct relating to the setting. 4. The employee should also be issued with a letter giving clear and concise advice on the allegation made against them. The letter should be given to the employee at least 72 hours in advance of the meeting and include full details of date, time and location of the meeting and who will be in attendance. 5. The employee should be advised of their right to be accompanied at the meeting by a recognised trade union representative or a work colleague. 6. During the meeting the manager should inform the employee of the allegation against them and provided with any evidence and or witness statements obtained regarding the matter. The employee should be given full opportunity at the meeting to respond to the manager over the allegations. 7. During the meeting the manager must decide whether or not a disciplinary penalty is to be issued. The outcome of the meeting must be confirmed in writing to the employee giving them full details of the appeal process available to them. 8. Following a disciplinary meeting there are usually three outcomes: No action taken or deemed necessary A Warning issued to the employee Dismissal of the employee 9. If the employee feels that they have been disciplined unfairly the manager should ask the employee to appeal in writing to the pre-school, detailing the grounds for their appeal. The employee must follow this procedure within seven days of the disciplinary meeting. 10. Following this an appeal meeting should then be arranged with the employee where possible with a different panel to that of the original disciplinary meeting. 11. Managers are also able to follow an informal grievance procedure where an employee and manager can discuss any issues on a day to day basis in a more comfortable environment and therefore hopefully resolve any problems that may have arisen within the setting with the employee. It is the responsibility of the manager to ensure that disciplinary and grievance procedures are carried out in an open and transparent manner with good and clear communication between all parties involved. The process should also be no-discriminatory and all matters should be dealt with quickly and within any specified times. Where at all possible the manager should attempt to deal with the disciplinary action informally to avoid the need for formal disciplinary action and possible employment tribunal. 4. Recruitment and selection process The first process within the pre school setting for recruitment and selection of staff is to evaluate the role of the job being advertised including the jobââ¬â¢s purpose within the setting, the tasks that will be required of the job holder. It is very important to consider what skills will be required to carry out the role. Decision on salary offered, hours of work, holiday entitlement and other terms and conditions must be made in order to be able to effectively create a job description for advertising. This will then give candidates a clear indication of what role they would be expected to play within the setting and what their key responsibilities will be. Advertisement of the vacancy should be made in various locations enabling applicants from all different groups the opportunity to apply. It is important to inform applications that you are an equal opportunities employer and that you welcome and encourage applicants from all sections of the community. The format of advertising and applying should be clear as to the role being offered and give details of the renumeration package. The advertisement should include the following job description and person specification : The name of the pre-school Description of the position vacant Skills required for the position by the applicant Details of essential requirements of the applicant Location of the position Renumeration package Hours of work Whether position is temporary of permanent Full details on how to apply for the position Contact details of the pre-school Closing date for applications Creating an application information pack for applicants to fill out helps the process of recruitment as all information received from candidates will be received in the same consistent format. This also gives the applicant full details of the job description and person specification required. It should also include guidelines on how to complete the application and the pre-schools terms and conditions relating to the role. Once all applications have been received by the pre-school it is then the process of short listing the applicants which are believed to be suited to the role. This process must not be discriminatory in any way, e.g. exclude applicants because of race, age, religion, sexual belief, etc. Following the process interviews can then be offered to applicants. All applicants which have not been successful in the short listing process should be informed in writing. All interviews should be conducted in a fairway for all applicants. Interviews can be very daunting and nerve-wracking for people so you should try to make them feel at ease during the interview. Staff Policies Upon recruitment of a suitable applicant, the applicant should be given a copy of the Pre-school policies and encouraged to read them in order to become familiar with them. They should also be given the Employee Handbook which provides them with all the information regarding the pre-school policies, procedures and guidelines. It is a good idea to recruit an existing member of staff where possible to mentor the new member of staff which will give them an opportunity to get familiar with the day to day running of the pre-school and the other staff and children within the setting. All new staff should be made aware of the pre-school health and safety policy, fire safety policy, childrenââ¬â¢s medication policy and information on any children with allergies. Particular emphasis should be placed on staff development to ensure skills are kept up to date and a high quality of care can be provided to the children and their parents/carers. The possibility of promotion within the pre-school should be made available to all staff and run in conjunction with the Appraisal process.

Women Voicing Their Pain Essay -- Racism Writing Literature Papers
Women Voicing Their Pain During the recent international anti-racism meeting, the World Conference Against Racism that was held in Durban, South Africa, the voices of victims of racism and its consequences were heard from around the world. These voices came in various forms, both written and verbal, and were communicated both directly and indirectly. The way that pain is voiced around the world, such as the variety and method of communicating pain, can affect how the audience understands the authorââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"woundâ⬠. It can affect how genuinely pain is conveyed and also how the pain applies to other victims. One of the voices heard during the World Conference was that of Diya Muliah, an Indonesian woman working as a maid in Malaysia. Diyaââ¬â¢s story is a moving account about how poverty combined with immigration policies can create a negative situation for women not only in Malaysia, but all around the world. But is Diyaââ¬â¢s writing meant to be a source of healing for her or others, and to what extent is her writing actually considered healing? Diya is working as a maid for a Chinese Malaysian woman to support her family in Indonesia. After working for a while in Malaysia, Diyaââ¬â¢s boss asks for her passport. Not knowing any better, Diya hands it over, not knowing the potential ramifications of not having her documents with her at all times. After a while, Diyaââ¬â¢s boss begins to abuse her both verbally and physically. ââ¬Å"She screamed at me constantly, grabbed me by my blouse and shoved me around roughlyâ⬠, recalls Diya. She withholds Diyaââ¬â¢s wages and claims that she will be paid bi-annually, which is an obvious lie. Diya describes these abuses vividly in an effort to describe the ââ¬Å"woundâ⬠she is trying to show the world. The fact that Diya... ... context in which her pain is voiced (the World Conference Against Racism, in South Africa) puts a lot at stake for her writing. Whether she conveys her wound effectively could possibly determine whether legislation to help her and others would be enacted. Aside from the global repercussions of her text (however weighty they may be), it is also important to analyze Diyaââ¬â¢s attempts to heal herself and others through her writing. While she does effectively communicate her pain, she does not show that this communication will lead to the healing of her wounds. The audience is left feeling that her wounds are as open and fresh as before she began writing. Diya situates this ââ¬Å"woundednessâ⬠in a global setting in which changes could possibly be enacted to help her and other female victims of racism, but she fails to heal her own emotional scars and arguably those of others.

Euthanasia Essay: Mercy Killing or Murder? -- Euthanasia Physician Ass
Euthanasia: Mercy Killing or Murder? à à à We, as humans, are mortal beings.à Our life span is finite.à Even though we are mortal, we try to hang onto our lives as long as we can; fear of death and wanting to live forever are, after all, part of human nature.à Sometimes, however, the field of medicine capitalizes on this aspect of humanity. While it is certainly true that one goal of medicine has always been to prolong life, another goal has been the alleviation of pain and suffering.à One point at which these two views collide is over the hotly debated issue of euthanasia. à à à à à Euthanasia, or "mercy killing," as it has been called, is certainly not an issue with just two sides.à There are many shades of gray involved, so to speak.à Euthanasia, after all,à ranges from simply allowing an individual to die naturally without life support or "pulling the plug" (passive euthanasia), all the way to Jack Kevorkian's suicide machine (active euthanasia). To complicate things further, there is also voluntary euthanasia, "Cases in which patient requests to be killed, and dies as a result of action taken by another person," involuntary euthanasia; "cases in which no action is requested because the patient is unconscious, senile, or otherwise incapable of making a request, but the person is allowed to die or is killed," and nonvoluntary euthanasia; "cases in which a conscious, terminally ill patient states that they do not want to die, but is allowed to die or is killed anyway" (http://valdosta.peachnet.edu).à While an individual may advocate one form of euthanasia, it is not uncommon for the same person to be completely against another form.à There are cases in which euthanasia is wrong, especially cases involving conscious pe... ...d dreaded events that human beings ever have to go through.à This is probably the main reason that euthanasia is so controversial.à It is human nature for us to try and prolong our lives as long as possible, and, through medicine, we have prolonged them quite a bit.à It is important to remember, nevertheless, that sometimes while attempting to fight our common enemy death, we lose sight of the best interests of the individuals whose lives we are affecting.à Are these people not the most qualified people to make this decision?à It is, after all, their lives that hang in the balance. John Steinbeck â⬠ââ¬ÅOf Mice and Menââ¬Â Coursework Essay
ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ written by John Steinbeck set in California near Soledad in the 1930ââ¬â¢s on two men called George and Lennie who travel together from ranch to ranch trying to make their life like the â⬠American Dreamâ⬠what Lennie shares with George. During this time there was a depression in America, which meant unemployment and Racism was high so men had to go to different ranches. Racism and bad employment at this time in the United States was called ââ¬Å"The Great Depression.â⬠After The Great Depression, World War 2 had started and John Steinbeck decided to write the book ââ¬Å"Of Mice and Menâ⬠what was influenced also by a poet called Robert Burns who was Scottish and also had released a book in the past. Later ââ¬Å"Of Mice And Menâ⬠was published in 1937. The American Dream in the U.S.A is thought to be for any American to go through hard work and courage to achieve the goal of their life leading them to success. Lennie and Georges Dream was to own a farm house with lots of chickens and rabbits. ââ¬Å"The American Depressionâ⬠what had been the harshest depression ever what was from 1929 leading to 1939. This Depression started in North America what went on to Europe and other areas of the world. Although it was started in the united states because of the fast economic growth, it lead the whole world to a disaster. This was originally started because of over production in agriculture what lead to rising debt with farmers. The ranch where Lennie and George end up working for was near Soledad, which is south east of Salinas, Weed was nearby. Soledad what meant lonely was an ideal setting to the story for people who could translate Soledad into English. All of the ranchers with them are lonely with no family and never have anything to look forward to just their daily routines and also just thinking of ââ¬Å"The American Dreamâ⬠. After the ranchers do their routines the only kind of entertainment what they do is play cards. The ranchers belong to no ââ¬â one what everyone knows ââ¬Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world . . . They got no familyâ⬠. This also adds to the fact that the ranchers are missing out from a lot in their lifeââ¬â¢s as they have no family or friends to share their fun with and they have no life only sadness. Ranchers donââ¬â¢t seem happy as they never have any fun entertaining things to look forward to like normal people so they just carry on with their lives in loneliness and misery. George Milton who is a small and intelligent man with sharp feutures. He is Lennies carer as he always has to take care of him and be beside him through everything as he is, his only friend. After Georgeââ¬â¢s aunty died he had to look after Lennie as he was the only one he could talk to, but got fed up as Lennie talked like a child. Even though George leads Lennie out of problems what he gets him self into accidentally he loves him a lot but doesnââ¬â¢t like to show it. Lennie Small is large and has a shapeless face. He drags his feet when he walks, and lets his arms hang. He has a childââ¬â¢s brain as he doesnââ¬â¢t really remember anything and looks up to Lennie as he leads him in the right way and always helps him in bad situations. Lennie in the story gets compared to an animal more than a human as he is a really big man who is mentally retarded ââ¬Å"Dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his pawsâ⬠. George and Lennie relation differs from the other ranchers as they travel together where ever they go and are not lonely as the other ranchers as they have got each other. Crooks is an old black man, he is called this because he has a crooked back he is the stable worker, with a personality just like Candyââ¬â¢s. Crooks doesnââ¬â¢t like company like candy and also wants to live for George and Lennies dream. He has a small place where he lives by himself because of his color as he can not stay in the bunk-house. Lennie gets along with crooks more than anyone else as their resemblances are the same. Crooks is one individual who spends most of his time reading and is a fairly clever person, he lives in a small space, with no one with him. He is segregated because of his color. ââ¬Å"Crooks said, long as you wonââ¬â¢t get out and leave me alone.â⬠He is not allowed in the bunk-house to play cards as the other ranchers say he stinks, but he tells Lennie ââ¬Å"You all stink to meâ⬠Candy is an old man with one arm who works as a swamper. Candy had an old dog but agreed to kill it as the entire ranch workers were complaining that it smelt ââ¬Å"we canââ¬â¢t sleep with him stinkin around in hereâ⬠. Candy is very attached to his dog which he had since it was a pup, and was the only thing he could really talk to. When he hears about George and Lennieââ¬â¢s dream of getting their own place, he asks them to take him with them and offers them his savings to help. He offers his money to them as he doesnââ¬â¢t have any other family to share his savings with. Candy becomes very happy, as he thinks he will not be lonely again, but these dreams are broken in the end. Curley the bossesââ¬â¢ son who was a welt weight boxer. He is short and wanted to prove that he wasnââ¬â¢t a laboring man. He acts as he is superior to anyone else in the ranch. He goes around like he is the boss but no one dares to go up to him as he is a strong boxer. Curley is quite a violent man and in the story he ends up getting in to a fight because he thought that Lennie was laughing at him ââ¬Å"No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at meâ⬠. Curleys wife who is always left lonely and no-one respects her, Curley never pays attention to her She is forced to flirt with other ranchers to get attention however, she does not get it as everyone knows Curley will be furious if he finds out and any one who will try it with Curleys wife will get into very big trouble with the boss. She is one of the loneliest people in the story as everyone neglects her and never pays attention to her so she is forgotten out from everyone else. Even though she dresses up like a tart she doesnââ¬â¢t achieve anything wit the other ranchers. Even when she tells Curley ââ¬Å"I never get to talk to nobody, I get awful lonelyâ⬠she still gets neglected. The people who are most lonely in the story are Candy, Crook and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. Candy is lonely because, he has no family or friends. His only friend was his dog who he could talk to. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve had his since he was a pup.â⬠This shows that the main people who are lonely are really different from normal people as they never have anything to look out for. George and Lennieââ¬â¢s relation is very strong unique friendship as none of the other ranchers travel with anyone else or share experiences traveling together or either copeing with life together. They are good friends because they share the same dream of owning a farm. George wanted to be his own boss. Lennie wanted, to pet animals all day long and they both believed that it will come true and even when George has doubts he encourages Lennie. They both know how important they are to each other and Lennie likes it when George tells him that ââ¬Å"I got you and you got meâ⬠. They both look out for each other as they depend on one and other, they havenââ¬â¢t got no one else like friend or family â⬠Ranchers are loneliest guys in the world they got no familyâ⬠. In the end George has to kill Lennie to save him from being killed by the other ranchers what would have been twice as bad seeing a close friend die. ââ¬Å"The American Dreamâ⬠was something what George and Lennie truly believed in. Without the dream no ââ¬â one would have nothing to look forward to but George and Lennie were well in way of thinking about their future. This was their main objective through out the story of owning a big farm together even crooks and candy got involved in with the dream John Steinbeck wanted each characters individual self to have some thing to look forward to in their up and coming life. To the end of the story Lennie goes to the place where George told him to go if he got into any trouble near by the river. Then Lennie began to think and imagined a rabbit who told him that George would get rid of him because, he is sick of him. And when George comes to the place where he had told Lennie to wait Lennie asks that if he would leave him and George replies back no. Then Lennie decides to leave but George says no and reminds him of the Dream they had planned of them two owning a farm with Furry rabbits and lots of land. But then George tells Lennie to look across the river and Shoots him with the gun to the back of his head. Slim guesses what had happened and reassures George that it had to be done in the end for the best. This was very important for George to do as he can live a life where he doesnââ¬â¢t have to look out for some-one else rather than him self. But also George will become really lonely without Lennie besides him and also their Dream of being together in a big farm had been destroyed. But now George can settle down and think about how he is going to go on with the rest of his life and what job to do without him keeping to move. The thing that has died with Lennie is everything that George and Lennie had. George had done everything for Lennie and could take no more. He had protected him so much an always encouraged him to the max. George killed Lennie as a good friend to save him from harsh misery. The theme of loneliness in this book is important If the characters in the book werenââ¬â¢t lonely then they wouldnââ¬â¢t have done the things that they did and so there wouldnââ¬â¢t have been the same. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and Lennie die because of loneliness which causes George to be even more lonely. If Curleyââ¬â¢s wife hadnââ¬â¢t been lonely she wouldnââ¬â¢t have started the conversation with Lennie which caused her death.
